First SouthSeminars

Where do I start…

My name is Dea, I own and work out of Pearl Collective located in Newbury, I’ve attended and taught at UK piercer conferences, which I thought would be stressful and scary, but really I enjoyed it and thought heck how do I start my own?

SOUTHSEMINARS

The name and first logo came very quickly to my friend and business partner Alex, who is indeed still helping me to this day, well actually the name was the tricky part, mainly because I wanted it to be piercing related and Alex thought that would be a bad idea due to legal stuff, so the name South Seminars came to us.

The next part was indeed trying to find a location that seemed perfect for travel and venues, it was a little bit of a nightmare to find somewhere that 1. would allow us to hire a room and 2. do it under a fairly new business. Luckily a venue was happy to help us, Novotel Hotel in Reading. Our next process was the stuff behind closed doors, insurances and everything else, luckily Alex knew quite a bit about that so it was sorted fairly quickly.

Speakers, this was a little tricky, mainly because the time we were holding it, during February half term, which for most piercers that’s a busy day and also a weekend date too. I (Dea) already knew I wanted to speak, so I started asking people that I knew had already spoken at conferences before and I’ve taken the classes too, and happy to speak at a small seminar for just 1 day.

The tickets went quick, however it was at a limited amount so of course I knew the amount I had up seemed small, it was good for the first ever SouthSeminars day event.

The day itself went fairly smoothly, with help from Lauren (lfordpiercings) who volunteered the day to help me out. I was just overwhelmed with people turning up and classes were going ahead.

Once the day had finished, I edited the certificates and emailed them to the people who attended. I also got a google doc out to ask for feedback, which I’m greatly appreciative to those who filled it out and were completely honest. Due to this feedback I knew how to make the next one better…
